Adele's '21' Is Only Album To Sell Over A Million Copies





Adele's smash hit album "21" is well on its way to being the top selling record for the second year in a row.

With over 5.8 million copies sold in 2011 and over half of that (3.69 million) already in 2012, "21" is the only album to sell over a million copies since January 1.

The album has also amassed more sales this year than the the number two, three, four and five releases combined.

At second is Lionel Richie country-crossover "Tuskegee," selling 910,000 copies; followed by One Direction's "Up All Night" (899,000 copies); Whitney Houston's "Greatest Hits" and pop hits compilation Now That's What I Call Music, Vol. 41.

With album sales numbers down, digital sales are up. Leading the way is Gotye, with a record 5.5 million downloads of hit single "Somebody That I Used to Know). The song broke the record for most downloads in the first six months of one year, previously held by Katy Perry's "E.T." The song is also the first ever to pass the 5 million download mark in six months.

fun.'s "We Are Young" also topped the high water mark, selling 5.1 million copies.

Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe", Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" and "Starships" by Nicki Minaj round out the top five.
