Vanessa Hudgens and Dakota Fanning Cut Their Hair for Critical Acclaim
It's a tried and true strategy: A gorgeous actress sheds her glamorous look in favor of grit for a role and subsequently lands an Oscar. We can name more than a few including Charlize Theron, Halle Berry and Hilary Swank (twice!).
Now, it seems Hollywood's younger set is giving the tactic a go. Dakota Fanning and Vanessa Hudgens have both signed on for unexpected, emotionally trying roles with rugged exteriors that they hope will win them critical acclaim.
Dakota has been spotted with a pixie-cut wig for her turn as a leukemia patient fulfilling her last wishes in Now Is Good. Vanessa on the other hand chopped off her hair—literally, she did it herself—for her role in the indie flick Gimme Shelter. The movie sees the High School Musical alumn playing the role of a pregnant teenager who is turned away by her Wall Street tycoon father and forced to survive on the streets. Both films are grittier than either girl has ever done and we're interested to see how they turn out.

Dakota & Elle Fanning in Vogue Magazine - August 2011
Dakota & Elle Fanning featured in VOGUE. Dakota said: 'I’ve been working since I was six, Elle since two. What you grow up with is what you become used to.' Does the weirdness of being a teenager in the spotlight ever get on her nerves?

Dakota Fanning at her Graduation Ceremony
Dakota Fanning looked young and fresh in her blue cap and gown this week at her high school's graduation ceremony. The Twilight star, 17, isn't going to give up her education for more movie-making time.
Fanning is very serious about her education and being a regular student. She was even homecoming queen her senior year and was on the cheerleading team.
Fanning's younger sister, Elle, spoke to E! Online this week at the premiere of the eighth grader's movie, Super 8. She told the website that she would be following in her sister's footsteps and going to college.
The actress was seen on the East Coast, looking at colleges like NYU, and was allegedly accepted to the school's Gallatin School of Individual Studies.
Fanning will be seen next in the last installment of The Twilight Saga, called Breaking Dawn, which has been cut into two separate parts. Part one will be premiering in November of 2011, and the second in the same month of 2012.
She will also be seen as Annie James in The Motel Life, which is set to debut in 2012.

Dakota Fanning Graduates High School
Oh Dakota, it seems like only yesterday we were reveling in the precociousness of your pre-teen youth. (It's been 10 years since I Am Sam!) Now you're getting out of high school the old-fashioned way: by graduating.
In an age when most teen stars do their book learning with a private teacher, Dakota Fanning's parents have been adamant in their insistence that she lead as normal a life as possible. That means that for the last four years she's attended North Hollywood's Campbell Hall Episcopal High School where she was a cheerleader and this year's Homecoming Queen, and now a graduate with honors.
The 17-year-old actress was photographed during the graduation ceremony on Monday wearing her blue cap and gown along with a gold cord signifying her academic achievements. People reports that Dakota's parents, and her younger sister, up-and-coming 13-year-old actress Elle Fanning, were there to cheer her on.
It remains to be seen whether Dakota will be following actresses such as Natalie Portman and Emma Watson into the Ivy League.

Dakota Fanning to Lose Virginity in 'Very Good Girls'
Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen are attached to a new drama film, "Very Good Girls". Other stars joining the young actresses are Dustin Hoffman, Peter Sarsgaard and Sissy Spacek.
Variety reports that the movie revolves around two girls, presumably Fanning and Olsen's characters, who decide to lose their virginity through the summer after they graduate from high school. However, problem comes when they both fall in love with the same charismatic artist. Later, they must find a way through lies to discover real love.
Naomi Foner, mother of Jake Gyllenhaal, will provide the script as well as make a directional debut. According to Deadline, Ealing Metro International and Prescience will finance the film, and will shop the forthcoming movie at 2011 Cannes Film Festival.
Fanning came to fame after she appeared in "I Am Sam", taking the role of Sean Penn's daughter. She has been working on "Twilight Saga's Breaking Dawn". Olsen, in the meantime, has made a notable appearance at 2011 Sundance Film Festival through her role in "Martha Marcy May Marlene". She will next appear in "Silent House" and "Peace, Love, and Misunderstanding".

Dakota Fanning Gets A Trim
Dakota Fanning heads back to her car after stopping at Rudy’s Barbershop for a quick trim in Silver Lake, Calif., on Tuesday afternoon (April 12).
The 17-year-old actress’s name has been floating around the web alongside a new Marc Jacob‘s fragrance called “Oh Lola.”
No word on whether or not Dakota is the face of the scent, but JJJ will let you know as soon as we hear for sure.

Elle and Dakota Fanning in Talks to Co-star in a Biopic on the Shaggs
The Fanning sisters, Elle and Dakota, are in talks to team up as siblings (method!) for a planned feature film about the sixties family girl-group curiosity the Shaggs. The Shaggs, one of rock's quirkier no-hit wonders, were comprised of four New Hampshire sisters — Dot, Betty, Helen, and Rachel Wiggin — who had no seeming musical aptitude, but formed a band anyway because their father, Austin Wiggin, insisted his mother’s session with a palm reader pre-visioned their global success despite their awkward, gangly appearance. They recorded one cacophonous album, 1969's Philosophy of the World, which was widely derided, and they laid down the instruments they weren't quite sure what to do with in the first place after their father's death in 1975. But they did have their fans, like Frank Zappa, who infamously called them "better than the Beatles," and the band NRBQ, which rereleased the girls' album in 1982.
Dieckmann (who directed 2009's Motherhood, with Uma Thurman) spent the late eighties and early nineties shooting music videos for R.E.M., Aimee Mann, and the Throwing Muses, and first set up her Shaggs movie at the now-defunct Artisan Entertainment, and it bounced around Hollywood for years — until now.
Oddly, just as the Fanning sisters are boarding Dieckmann’s cinematic project, a long-gestating Off Broadway musical about the Shaggs and their only album is also finally and simultaneously taking shape. The Shaggs: Philosophy of the World starts previews in mid-May, and opens Off Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in June.
It’s almost Greek in nature,” says John Langs, the musical’s director and co-creator. “There’s a very clear line of an American Kronos, devouring his children: He essentially imprisoned his teenage daughters and erased their years of going from girls to women, and replaced it with endless band practice and calisthenics. Now, with our show and the movie coming together, I feel like we’ve become instruments of this prophecy. I feel the hand of Austin Wiggin pushing at my back.”

Dakota Fanning Going Mississippi Wild
Turns out that hiatus from acting didn’t last as long as one would have thought, but Hollywood is a fickle place and I’m sure Dakota Fanning knows better than anyone that “one day you’r in, and the next day you are out”. Which is probably why in less than a month the elder Fanning sister has signed on to star in three films, the first we told you about was GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT, next up is MOTEL LIFE and finally MISSISSIPPI WILD. In MOTEL LIFE, Fanning will join Emile Hirsch and Stephen Dorff, which follows a couple of brothers who are on the lamb after they are involved in a hit-and-run accident. No word on what role Fanning will play in that. The other film is called MISSISSIPPI WILD and follows a young teenage boy (Ryan Donowho) and his girlfriend (Dakota Fanning) who steal some diamonds from a local gangster. Right now MISSISSIPPI WILD has three actors in the running to star: Robert Duvall, Forest Whitaker and Mickey Rourke.
MOTEL LIFE is set to start shooting this month and MISSISSIPPI WILD should begin shooting at the end of next month.
